"If you were a god," I  said to Odysseus once as we lay on the forest floor, "I would expect you to be peevish, boastful, vain, deceitful and vengeful. But since you' re a man, I expect you to be kind, strong and wise."
"And if you were a goddess, " he replied, "What could I expect from you?"
